Getting started

What does a cybersecurity company actually do for a business?

A cybersecurity partner finds the weaknesses in your systems, helps you fix them in order of real risk, and prepares your team for audits and incidents. At NPLUS Global, this includes vulnerability assessments, cloud and application security, identity and access management, compliance readiness and security training. The aim is to reduce the chance and the cost of an incident, without forcing you to build a large in-house team.

Where should a small business start with cybersecurity?

Start with the protections that stop the most common attacks. Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, cloud and administrator accounts, remove access for former staff, patch anything exposed to the internet, and test that your backups can be restored. Then write a short incident plan. A focused assessment can show which of these matter most for your business and which you can leave until later.

How do I know if my company has been hacked?

Common signs include unknown sign-in alerts, new mailbox forwarding rules, unexpected accounts, unusual cloud bills, locked files and colleagues receiving odd emails from you. Some attacks stay quiet for a long time, so a lack of obvious signs is not proof of safety. If you suspect a problem, preserve your logs, avoid wiping systems, and contact your legal counsel, insurer and a qualified incident response provider.

What is a cybersecurity risk assessment?

It is a structured review of what you need to protect, what could go wrong, how likely that is and how much harm it would cause. The result is a ranked list of risks with recommended actions, owners and dates. It helps leaders spend money on the problems that matter rather than on whichever tool was advertised most recently.

How much does a cybersecurity assessment cost?

Cost depends on your size, the number of systems in scope and how deep the work needs to go. A focused review of a small cloud environment is very different from a multi-site enterprise program. We confirm the scope first and then provide a clear estimate before any work begins, so you know what you will receive and what it will cost.

How long does it take to improve our security?

Many companies can close their most serious gaps within the first 30 to 90 days by focusing on MFA, access, patching, public exposure and backups. A full program, including policies, training and compliance preparation, normally takes longer. Security is ongoing work, so the goal is steady, measurable risk reduction rather than a single finish line.

Do we need an in-house security team?

Not always. Many growing companies combine a technical owner inside the business with outside specialists and a part-time security leader. This gives you experience on demand without the cost of a full team. As you grow, or if your regulatory requirements increase, it may make sense to hire and then bring more work in-house.

What cybersecurity services does NPLUS Global not provide?

We focus on assessment, hardening, compliance readiness, training and incident readiness. We do not issue SOC 2 reports or ISO 27001 certificates ourselves, because those must come from independent auditors and certification bodies. For needs that sit outside our services, such as round-the-clock monitoring or specialist penetration testing, we can help you define requirements and work with a suitable provider.

Common attacks and what to do

How do most cyber attacks start?

Most begin with something ordinary: a phishing message, a stolen or reused password, an unpatched system, an exposed cloud service or a compromised supplier. Attackers then try to gain more access, reach sensitive data and cause impact. Each of those stages gives you a chance to stop them, which is why layered protection works better than relying on one tool.

What should I do first after clicking a phishing link?

Report it to IT or your security contact immediately, without fear of blame. If you entered a password, change it and end all active sessions, then check your account for new forwarding rules and unfamiliar sign-ins. If the link downloaded a file, disconnect the device from the network and ask for it to be checked. Speed matters far more than embarrassment.

How can we prevent ransomware?

Reduce the ways in by using strong MFA, fast patching and careful remote access. Limit how far an attacker can spread through least-privilege access and network segmentation. Most importantly, keep protected offline or immutable backups and test that you can restore them. Combined with a rehearsed response plan, this reduces both the likelihood and the impact of an attack.

Should a company pay a ransom?

There is no simple answer, and the decision should involve legal counsel, your insurer and law enforcement. Payment does not guarantee that you will recover your data or that stolen data will be deleted, and it can create legal risk if the recipient is under sanctions. Good backups and preparation give you more options when that moment comes.

What is business email compromise and how do we stop it?

Business email compromise is a fraud in which someone impersonates an executive or supplier, often to redirect a payment. Because there may be no malware, technical tools can miss it. Use two-person approval for payments, verify any bank detail change on a phone number you already hold, protect mailboxes with strong MFA, and train finance staff to treat urgency as a warning sign.

How do attackers use AI in phishing and fraud?

AI helps attackers write convincing messages in fluent language, research targets quickly and imitate voices. That makes old advice such as looking for spelling errors less reliable. Focus instead on verification procedures, phishing-resistant MFA and a culture where people feel safe questioning unusual requests, even when they appear to come from a senior leader.

What is a supply chain attack?

It is an attack that reaches you through a supplier, software product or service provider you trust. Reduce the risk by keeping a list of your vendors, reviewing the most critical ones, limiting their access and using contracts that require them to notify you of incidents. Also plan what you would do if a key vendor suddenly became unavailable.

Are small businesses really targeted by hackers?

Yes. Many attacks are automated and look for any weak system, regardless of company size. Smaller firms can also be attractive because they often have fewer protections and may connect to larger customers. You do not need enterprise budgets to reduce this risk, but you do need the basics in place and someone responsible for keeping them there.

Compliance and audits

What is SOC 2 and who needs it?

SOC 2 is an independent attestation report, based on the AICPA Trust Services Criteria, about how a service provider protects customer data. It is not a legal requirement, but many larger customers ask for it, particularly from SaaS and technology vendors. If security reviews are slowing your sales, it is often worth considering.

What is the difference between SOC 2 Type I and Type II?

Type I looks at whether your controls are suitably designed at one point in time. Type II tests whether they actually operated over a period, often 3 to 12 months. Many enterprise buyers prefer Type II, while Type I can be useful when you need to show progress sooner. Ask your key prospects what they will accept.

Should we do SOC 2 or ISO 27001 first?

Let your customers decide. SOC 2 is common among North American buyers, while ISO 27001 is an internationally recognized certification that is often requested elsewhere, including in Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia. If you sell widely, plan for both, because many of the controls and much of the evidence overlap.

How long does it take to prepare for ISO 27001?

It depends on your size, scope and starting point. You need a working information security management system, including risk assessment, policies, internal audit and management review, and it should be operating before certification. Smaller organizations with good habits can move faster than complex ones. A gap assessment gives you a realistic timeline.

Does NPLUS Global issue SOC 2 reports or ISO certificates?

No. SOC 2 reports must come from an independent CPA firm, and ISO 27001 certificates from a certification body. Our role is to prepare you: assess gaps, design controls, write policies and organize evidence. We can also coordinate with the auditor you choose, which keeps the process independent and credible to your customers.

What does an auditor look for in a security audit?

Auditors test whether you do what your policies say. Expect them to sample access reviews, joiner and leaver records, change approvals, vulnerability tickets, vendor reviews, training records, incident records and backup tests. Keep this evidence as you go, because collecting it months later is painful and can reveal gaps that you can no longer fix for that period.

What are the main requirements of PCI DSS?

PCI DSS applies to organizations that store, process or transmit payment card data. It covers network security, data protection, vulnerability management, access control, monitoring, testing and security policies. Your obligations depend on how you handle cards, and reducing where card data appears can reduce your scope. Your acquiring bank or a qualified assessor can confirm exactly what applies.

What is the GDPR's security requirement?

GDPR requires appropriate technical and organizational measures for personal data, based on the risk involved. It also sets rules for reporting personal data breaches, generally within 72 hours to the supervisory authority where required. Security is only part of GDPR compliance, so your legal adviser should also review your lawful basis, contracts and individual rights processes.

Healthcare security

Does HIPAA apply to software vendors?

Often, yes. If your company creates, receives, maintains or transmits protected health information for a healthcare organization, you are generally a business associate with direct obligations under the HIPAA Security Rule. Your legal counsel should confirm your status for each service, but it is wise to assume obligations whenever patient data is involved.

What is a HIPAA risk analysis?

It is a documented review of where electronic protected health information lives, what threats and weaknesses affect it, how likely they are and what harm could follow. It is a required part of the Security Rule. The results should feed into a risk management plan with owners and deadlines, and they should be updated when your systems change.

Is there an official HIPAA certification?

No. The US Department of Health and Human Services does not certify organizations as HIPAA compliant. Third-party assessments and reports can provide useful evidence to customers, but you should be careful about any company that promises an official certificate. What matters is your risk analysis, safeguards, policies and how they operate in practice.

How should hospitals protect medical devices?

Start with a complete inventory, including who owns each device and which software it runs. Separate devices from general networks where possible, control remote vendor access and work with manufacturers on supported updates. Many devices cannot be patched quickly, so compensating controls and monitoring are especially important. Include clinical teams, because patient safety must guide these decisions.

Can staff use AI tools with patient data?

Only with appropriate safeguards. Before any patient data enters an AI tool, confirm that the vendor will sign a business associate agreement where required, check how data is stored and used, and restrict access. Staff need clear rules and approved tools. Without them, well-meaning people may paste sensitive information into public services that were never approved.

SaaS and technology companies

What security do enterprise customers expect from SaaS vendors?

Expect questions about SOC 2 or ISO 27001, single sign-on, encryption, access controls, secure development, vulnerability management, backups, incident response and subprocessors. A prepared set of answers and documents can make reviews far quicker. Investing early in these basics also tends to reduce the amount of rework you need later.

How do we build security into our software development process?

Add threat modeling for significant new features, peer code review, and automated scanning for code, dependencies and secrets in your pipeline. Keep real customer data out of test environments, and control who can deploy to production. The best approach fits how developers already work, so security checks support fast delivery rather than stopping it.

What should we do if an API key is leaked in code?

Revoke or rotate the key right away, then review logs to see whether it was used. Removing it from the latest commit is not enough, because it can remain in the repository history and in copies. Afterward, add secret scanning to your development pipeline and move credentials into a proper secrets manager.

How do we answer long security questionnaires faster?

Create a library of approved answers and supporting evidence, with an owner who keeps it up to date. Publish what you can in a trust center, and share your SOC 2 report under a non-disclosure agreement. Answer honestly about gaps and your plans to address them, as buyers often respect a clear response more than a vague one.

What is a virtual CISO, and when does a startup need one?

A virtual CISO provides senior security leadership on a part-time basis. A startup often benefits when enterprise customers start asking security questions, when an audit is approaching, or when investors want to see a clear plan. It gives you experienced judgment, a roadmap and credible reporting without the cost of a full-time executive.

Finance, retail and manufacturing

What cybersecurity rules apply to financial services firms in the US?

It depends on your activities and regulators. The FTC Safeguards Rule applies to many non-bank financial institutions, banks have their own regulators, and state rules such as New York's DFS cybersecurity regulation may also apply. Payment card standards can add further obligations. Your legal adviser should confirm which apply, and we can help you meet the security requirements.

How can accounting and finance teams prevent payment fraud?

Combine process and technology. Require two people to approve significant payments, verify bank detail changes on a known number, and protect finance mailboxes with strong MFA. Use alerts for unusual logins and mailbox rules, and provide finance teams with specific training. Treat pressure, secrecy and last-minute changes as signals to slow down and check.

How should retailers protect customer and payment data?

Reduce the data you hold, use validated payment providers so card data rarely touches your systems, and keep e-commerce platforms and plugins updated. Protect administrator accounts with strong MFA and monitor for unauthorized code changes on checkout pages. Also include store systems, loyalty platforms and third-party marketing tools in your review, since customer data often spreads across them.

How do manufacturers protect factory and OT systems?

Begin by finding out what is connected. Separate IT and operational technology networks, secure remote vendor access and make sure you have tested recovery plans for production systems. Older equipment may not support patches or modern controls, so segmentation and monitoring are often the practical answers. Any changes should be planned with operations to avoid disrupting production.

What is CMMC, and who needs it?

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification is a US Department of Defense program for protecting certain government information in its supply chain. Defense contractors and subcontractors may need to meet its requirements, depending on the information they handle and their contracts. Check your contracts and current DoD guidance early, because preparation can take significant time.

Companies in India

What cybersecurity rules should Indian companies know?

Key examples include CERT-In directions on incident reporting and logs, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and sector rules from regulators such as the RBI, SEBI and IRDAI. Which ones apply depends on your business and industry. Rules can change, so check current requirements with your legal adviser and build your security program around them.

How quickly must Indian companies report a cyber incident to CERT-In?

CERT-In's April 2022 directions generally require specified cybersecurity incidents to be reported within six hours of noticing them. Because that window is so short, your incident plan should name who decides and who reports, and include current contact details. Your legal adviser can confirm how the directions apply to your specific organization and any later updates.

Do Indian IT and BPO companies need SOC 2 or ISO 27001?

Often, yes, because their overseas customers ask for them. US clients frequently ask for SOC 2, while ISO 27001 is widely recognized worldwide and in India. HIPAA requirements may also apply if you handle US patient data. Look at your top customers' requirements and upcoming contracts before deciding where to begin.

How does India's DPDP Act affect security?

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act requires organizations that handle digital personal data to take reasonable security safeguards and sets out breach notification duties. Practical steps include knowing what data you hold, limiting access, encrypting sensitive data and preparing for incidents. Check the latest rules and timelines with your legal adviser, since implementation details may change.

Cloud, identity and AI security

Is the cloud secure enough for sensitive data?

Major cloud platforms can be very secure, but the shared responsibility model means that your settings, identities and data remain your responsibility. Many incidents come from misconfigurations rather than a failure of the provider. With good access controls, encryption, logging and regular reviews, the cloud can meet demanding security requirements.

What are the most common cloud security mistakes?

Common examples include public storage, open management ports, excessive permissions, old access keys, weak administrator sign-in, missing audit logs and unprotected backups or snapshots. These affect AWS, Azure and Google Cloud alike. A benchmark-based review can find them, and organization-level guardrails help prevent them from coming back after the first cleanup.

What is the best type of multi-factor authentication?

Phishing-resistant options, such as passkeys and FIDO2 hardware security keys, offer the strongest protection, because they only work on the genuine website. Authenticator apps are better than text messages, and text messages are better than a password alone. Many companies use passkeys for general staff and hardware keys for administrators and high-risk roles.

What is zero trust in simple terms?

Zero trust means that you do not automatically trust a user or device just because it is inside your network. Each access request is checked using identity, device health and context, and people get only the access they need. It is an approach built up over time, rather than one product you can buy and install.

How often should we review who has access to our systems?

A common approach is quarterly for important systems, and immediately when someone changes roles or leaves. Reviews should be recorded, because auditors and customers may ask to see them. Automating joiner and leaver processes through single sign-on reduces the risk of old accounts remaining active and makes reviews much easier.

How do we stop employees from leaking data into AI tools?

Provide approved AI tools, set simple rules about which data can go where, and train people using realistic examples. Technical controls such as single sign-on, browser or network controls and data loss prevention can support the policy. Blocking everything without offering an alternative tends to push people toward personal accounts and devices.

How do you secure an AI agent?

Give it its own identity with the fewest permissions possible, treat incoming content as untrusted, and require human approval for costly or hard-to-reverse actions. Add spending limits, a stop switch and complete audit logs, then test against known difficult cases before launch. Review its behavior again whenever the model, tools or instructions change.
