AI Agents vs. Chatbots: What's the Difference and Which Does Your Business Need?
Chatbots answer questions; AI agents complete tasks. Learn how they differ, where each fits, and how to choose the right approach for your business.

"Chatbot" and "AI agent" are often used as if they mean the same thing. They don't — and the difference determines how much value you can get from AI.
A chatbot holds a conversation and answers questions, usually from a fixed set of content. An AI agent is given a goal, decides which steps to take, uses tools to take them, and checks the result. In short: chatbots talk, agents act.

Side-by-side comparison
Purpose
Chatbot: answer questions. Agent: complete tasks end to end.
Actions
Chatbot: replies with text. Agent: looks up records, updates systems, sends emails, books meetings.
Systems
Chatbot: usually one knowledge source. Agent: connects to CRM, ERP, help desk, calendars and databases.
Reasoning
Chatbot: single-turn responses. Agent: plans multiple steps and adapts when something changes.
Controls needed
Chatbot: content accuracy. Agent: permissions, approvals, logging and evaluation.
Where AI agents deliver the most value
Customer support
Resolve routine requests like order status or account changes, and hand complex cases to people with full context.
Sales operations
Qualify inbound leads, research accounts and book meetings directly into calendars.
Back office
Read invoices and forms, validate data and update finance or ERP systems.
Reporting
Gather data from several systems and produce weekly summaries automatically.
How to choose
If most requests can be answered from documentation, a well-grounded chatbot or knowledge assistant is enough. If requests require looking things up and changing records across systems, an agent will save far more time. Many organizations start with a knowledge assistant and add agent capabilities once they trust the results.
